LASH 101

It is very important to educate yourself and learn as much as you could before choosing where you want to go to get your eyelash extensions done. Nowadays, there are so many Lash Extensions places to choose from. It is extremely difficult for a someone new to decide where to go . If your eyes are not trained to look for flaws and mistakes, it is extremely difficult to differentiate good and bad lashes by just looking at the web pictures. I have performed and trained hundreds of lash extension students since 2005 when the trend was barely started in Orange County, California. For many years, starting up lash company from near and far came to Orange county to seek for my professional advices. Many of which now became the biggest and most renowned lash companies like Extreme Lash, Natural Lash, Luscious Lash International etc.

Sometimes, the clients can't look down at their own lashes so they can't detect the clumps or crisscrossed lashes that were put on them. Some clients are just plain happy with long lashes no matter how bad they were put on. That's a sad thing because they will eventually lose their own lashes over time. These clumped lashes can last for months because there are so much glue that held them together.  These lashes are stacked on like firewood and are held together by tons of adhesives. Even though most of the lashes are already pulled off from the roots, they are still hanging  onto each other because they are held in clumps. When the clump of lashes finally fall off, client will see a big gap with no lashes. In the contrary, if the lashes are put on individually one by one, they will slowly thinning out unnoticeably until the time for the next refill. There are many lash places began to put Y- shape or V shape lashes, which also known as double lashes. These type of lashes enable the technician to save time and create very thick set of lashes. The disadvantage of having these lashes is that it might look very pretty at first but very soon, as the natural lashes grow longer, these lashes start to turn upside down, crisscross and turning left and right unmanageably. Technically, lash technicians should only supposed to use 10 to maximum 20 percent of the Y-shape and the V-shape lashes to fill in the gaps of missing lashes or to add a little bit more volume but not to use 100 percent of these lashes like some places. If the lashes are put on correctly one by one, the lashes will stay up beautifully without turning upside down or sideway until the next refill.

It's is very important for you as a client to know the credential of your lash technicians. Are they experienced and well trained? Do they have the proper training certificate? Are they trained to remove lashes? Because if they don't know how to do lash properly, how do client expect them to know how to remove lashes.  I fix and repair bad lashes from other places every week and believe me, some lash removal process could take up to one or two hours in order to save all the lashes for my clients. I would like to share as much helpful information about lash extensions  as I could for everyone to educate themselves before getting their lashes done.

What are Individual Eyelash Extensions?

The Individual Eyelash Extension is a single lash that is applied one by one onto your natural lashes. The technician don't apply the glue directly onto your skin but about 1mm to 2mm down onto your natural eyelashes thereby reducing the risk of any allergic reaction that could occur from the glue.
Individual (single or one strand) lashes are lighter and last much longer than their multiple lash (meaning Y-shape, V-shape, double, triple lashes. The end results will vary depending on your chosen length, curl and the number of your natural eyelashes. The individual extension lashes can definitely extend and enhance whatever lashes you naturally have.

What are Individual (single or one strand) lashes?
Advantage
: If the lashes are put on correctly one by one, these lashes look very natural and blend very nicely with the natural lashes.  These lashes are very light and will stayed curl up beautifully without turning upside down or sideway until the next refill. Clients feels like wearing their own lashes because of their weightlessness.
Disadvantage: It might take longer for an inexperienced lash technician to do a very full set of lashes. It is very tedious and time consuming for a new lash technician.

What are Y-lash or V-lash (double) lashes
?

Advantage: These type of lashes enable the lash technician to save time and create very thick set of lash extensions. Many lash technicians resolved to using these lashes because most clients can't tell anyway between the different kinds of lashes. They are mostly concern about the length and the thickness.
Disadvantage: It might look very pretty at first but very soon, as the natural lashes grow longer, these lashes start to turn upside down, crisscross and turning left and right. The main reason is because they are too heavy for a single natural lash to carry the heavy load at a distance away from the roots.

What are clustered lashes?
These are not lash extensions in my opinion. These are false, clustered lash application to be used with temporary glue only. Eyelash extension glue is highly not recommended for these type of clustered lashes. The cluster holds a lots of glue. It cannot be applied to one single lash at a time and will definitely ties up lots of natural lashes together.

What are clumped lashes?

Clumped lashes are done by inexperience lash technicians who have no training whatsoever. These lashes are stacking on top of each other like haywires with tons of glue on them. The inexperience lash technicians are not trained to separate every single lash and to apply one lash at a time. The inexperience lash technicians use either single lashes or clustered lashes to stack one on top of the other to create volume. These clumped lashes can last for months because there are so much glue which held them together.  Even though most of the lashes are already pulled off from the roots, they are still hanging onto each other because they are held in clumps. When the clumped lashes finally fall off, client will see big, ugly looking gaps with missing natural lashes.

What are the most popular eyelash curl?

The most popular eyelash extension curls are J-curl and C-curl. You can choose the look that is best for your type of eyelashes and your style. J-curl is more natural looking and C-curl is more romantic and dramatic looking.

What are the different thicknesses?

Lashes comes in 4 different thicknesses: .10mm, .15mm, .20mm and .25mm
.10mm is very thin and light. It is barely noticeable when applied.
.15mm is thin. It is used for clients who like very natural looking lashes or clients who have very thin lashes.
.20mm is thicker and darker. It is the most popular lash thickness. It is also also very natural looking if applied correctly one by one.
.25mm is very thick. It is not recommended for people with thin lashes. It is rarely used because it can be very heavy for most                    natural lashes.

What are the different lengths of lashes?

The most popular lengths are ranging from 8mm, 9mm, 10mm, 11mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm
8mm or shorter lengths are used in the inner corner of the eyes.
Short is considered 9mm or 10mm
Medium is considered 11mm
Long is considered 12mm
Extra long is considered 13mm
14mm and 15mm are very long and dramatic.

When do client needs to come in for repair or touch ups?

It is highly recommend that clients should come in for proper Repair and Touch ups every three to four weeks to keep the lash extensions looking clean and beautiful. The health and safety of your natural lashes depend on how well you maintain them. If you want to wear lash extensions for many years to come, you need to keep them clean and well kept. That's why before each and every touch up, the certified eyelash specialists perform what we call a lash repair. This entails a detail cleaning of your natural eyelashes which promotes a healthy hair re-growth cycle. Afterwards, the lash technician check each and every one of your individual eyelash extensions and repair any that have became loose and remove those that are about ready to fall off. Then, the technician begin applying lash extension to the newly grown lashes.

What you should do on the day of the appointments?

It' very important on the day of your appointment to arrive with clean lashes and with no mascara or makeup residue

Be prepared for 1 1/2  hours to 2 hours for the  initial eyelash extension application procedure. Bring an IPod to listen to your favorite music radio station.

Shampoo your hair prior to service.

Do not perm your lashes. Perm lashes will bend the natural lashes and make lash extension harder to bond to natural lashes.

What you should do after your lash extension application?

For the first 24 hours after lash applications do not allow water to contact lashes.

Do not steam your face, use steam room or do hot Yoga

After 24 hours, you can shower and even swim with your new lash extensions. Of course using goggle while swimming is well recommended.

Do not use waterproof mascara or water based mascara because mascara cleaner is very harsh on lashes.

Do not use lash curler as it will break and separate both the lash extensions and your natural lashes.

Do not rub eyes or lashes when washing your face

If for any reason you wish to remove the extensions, please do not attempt to rem
ove them yourself. Have them removed professionally to avoid pulling out your natural lash. Either that or just let them fall out naturally over time.
